“Age couldn’t get in the way, I acquired a tech skill!”
Joan Osagiede
When it comes to learning a tech skill all you need is the right mindset and you can get it all. Such is the story of Joan Osagedie, a
beneficiary of the second cohort of the DigiGirls training program. Enjoy her story below.
“I longed to learn a tech skill, but believed the stereotype that only certain age groups could grasp it. Then, a Facebook post about the UK government-sponsored DigiGirls training caught my eye. Joy overwhelmed me as I discovered a program that welcomed my age range.
Excitedly, I chose the E-commerce learning path, but the journey wasn’t as easy as I thought it will be, but I had my Success Advisor and wonderful tutors that worked tirelessly to see me
succeed. I needed data to access my training materials and videos, thankfully the BWG (British Women Group) came to my rescue and provided data support during the program.
As a wife and mother of four it was huge task combining my day job with learning and being there for my family. It felt as if CyberSafe had preempted this, as the soft skills training covered Time Management. I have learned how to boost my productivity, position myself as an authority online, maintain good cyber hygiene and to build e commerce business.
It has been almost year after the program and I can boldly say building websites have become a joy for me. I have built an E-commerce website for my business and other small businesses with the skills gained. The training helped me see the need for the girl child involvement in tech, so I decided to become a DigiChampion, empowering me to train several ladies in my local community while honing my skills.
The DigiChampions are a community of DigiGirls Alumni on a mission to train ladies in our local community on the skills gained during the DigiGirls program. The program is still ongoing, and it has given me the opportunity to further hone my skills while contributing to development in my society.
